Pastoral Letters

Shepherds Speaking

The Shepherd's Voice to the Flock

Pastoral letters are personal communications from bishops and the Major Archbishop to the clergy and faithful of their diocese or the entire Syro-Malabar Church. They carry the weight of the bishop's teaching authority — the munus docendi — and speak to the spiritual needs of the moment.

Unlike circulars, pastoral letters are addressed to hearts, not institutions. They invite the faithful to deeper prayer, moral reflection, and communal action — guiding the Church through every season of history.

Selected Excerpts

Words from the bishops of the Syro-Malabar Church — speaking to the hearts of the faithful in every age.

"Let us walk together — bishop, priest, deacon, and lay faithful — as one Body of Christ. Synodality is not a programme; it is a way of being Church, rooted in our ancient tradition of communal discernment."

Cardinal George Alencherry

Major Archbishop, Syro-Malabar Church

"In the lands of our diaspora, you are living witnesses of an ancient faith. Guard the liturgy, teach the children, and let the beauty of our Qurbana be a light to the nations among whom you dwell."

Bishop Bosco Puthur

Diocese of Chicago — Syro-Malabar

2023

"The mountains and rivers of Wayanad are not resources to be consumed — they are gifts entrusted to us. Our faith demands that we protect creation as we protect the Eucharist: with reverence, with care, with gratitude."
